Road Trip for a Bike Trip
The car - Prius. Fast and comfortable, with the bike in the back. Westward in 700 mile chunks. A 21st century bubble of fossil fuel and electricity.
The drive - gets better the further west you go. Listening to Ian McClellan read the Odyssey. Nothing like seeing the mountaintops lit up by the sunrise while youre still in the dark.
Folks out west - ranch hands in pickups and ex hippies in beetles all wanted to see under the hood. The same questions from both groups. Cool!
The ride - 20 mile climbs, 60mph descents. Epic views. The sky is a kind of blue you just dont see back east. And the stars at 10,000 feet are so close they settle on your sleeping bag you as you dream.
